National Institute on Aging (NIA) The National Institute on Aging (NIA) was established in 1974 by the Research on Aging Act (PL 93-296) to support biomedical, behavioral and social research. It also provides research training on aging processes and on the diseases and other special problems and needs of older people. The NIA is one of 27 institutes and centers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and leads the federal effort on aging research. The NIA Intramural Research Program conducts basic and clinical research in Baltimore and on the NIH campus in Bethesda, Md. An important NIA mission is to expand support for cardiovascular aging research. The NIA's Biology of Aging Program supports basic research on the cellular and molecular basis of cardiovascular aging. The Geriatrics and Clinical Gerontology Program supports clinical and clinically related physiological and patient-oriented research on age-related changes of the cardiovascular system, including interactions with the pulmonary and renal systems. NIA's Neuroscience and Neuropsychology of Aging Program supports basic and clinical research on normal aging and diseases of the aging brain, including cerebrovascular aging. The Behavioral and Social Research Program supports activities regarding behavioral aspects of cardiovascular aging, including efforts to promote healthy behaviors and compliance with treatment regimens.
